Berlin - On May 25 the Protestant theologian Prof. Friedrich-Wilhelm Marquardt passed away in Berlin. He was born in 1928 and was professor emeritus of Protestant theology at the Free University of Berlin. For decades his scholarly work was concentrated on exploring the consequences of Auschwitz for Christian theology. His main work is a two-volume Christology, Das christliche Bekenntnis zu Jesus, dem Juden (The Christian Confession of Jesus, the Jew) that attempts to formulate Christian faith convictions consistently in relation to the Jewish roots of Christianity. In 1961 Marquardt was a co-founder of the Working Group "Jews and Christians" for the German Protestant Kirchentag. In 1968 he was - together with Friedrich Heer - the first recipient of the Buber-Rosenzweig Medallion of the German Coodinating Council of Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation.
